In the beginning there was darkness
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness.
Genesis 1:1-4 (NIV)
We need darkness to contrast the light. God formed this world to give us an understanding of who we are. We need to understand the darkness in order to understand what is light.
When we hit rock bottom we are completely confused about who we really are, that is when we are in darkness. That is when we can see what is good since now we know what is bad.
As it is in our world now, the world has hit rock bottom in many ways and is confused about it’s purpose. At the same time, we see people are making huge, positive contributions to the world, and are driven to make it a better place because they see how we can improve on our mistakes. We have a long history of mistakes (darkness) that we can and are learning from to see how to do things better and how to bring more and more goodness (light) into the world.
We can understand that darkness is a lie and that the truth is that we are all made in the image of God and not one single person is truly dark. It is just in our circumstances that have lead us to believe that we are bad, or people have made us feel like we are bad and now we believe it. If we believe that lie we continue to feed the lie and remain deeper in darkness making it more difficult to believe there is any hope to know the light, being what is good or that we are good.
We need to see the light in ourselves and the light in others and expose it. We need to recognize that the lie stems from fear, which produces a negative reaction in ourselves and in the world. Fear is insecurity. From insecurity our perceptions become altered causing ourselves to react to situations in anger, hopelessness, disrespectfulness, selfishness… all the things that God is not! We need to dig deep in ourselves to expose the root of our insecurities. Once the lie is exposed there is opportunity to heal and come into the light, hence, understanding our true selves. The light is what is truth and what is God.
A final thought…
You were created by God, therefore you are special and have greatness in you! You were created to give something uniquely you and good to this world. Seek it, believe in it, and you will find it! Choose God and you will choose to find all and more than you have ever desired. Notice the good in people and tell them what is good. That is how we get rid of the darkness. Shine a light on it. People need to start believing in who they are, a creation of God, and not that they are a lie (not a creation of God).
Good always trumps evil. In the end, goodness will win. Goodness will rehab this generation and generations to come until there is no more darkness, just infinite light. God is infinite goodness and light.
We are slowing down the process when we believe in darkness instead of believing in God.
