During this time at Passover, God commanded the Israelites to take a lamb for their home to be slaughtered after four days of living with it. This was done on the Sabbath just before Passover began, five days before the Israelite Exodus. The lamb was considered to be sacred, worshiped by the Egyptians, so Moses questioned God:
And Moses said, It is not proper so to do; for we shall sacrifice the abomination of the Egyptians before their eyes, and will they not stone us?Exodus 8:26
One of God’s commandments is for us to not worship idols. You shall have no other gods before me. (Exodus 20:3)
Why then did John call Jesus the lamb of God?
The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!John 1:29
John is referring to Jesus as being a perfect Passover lamb, without any blemish (1 Peter 1:19, Exodus 12:5) to be the ultimate sacrifice for sin (Hebrews 9:28) for us to believe in the things that Jesus believed in for us to be like him so that God would also find us perfect, without blemish and pass-over us.
He [Yeshua/Jesus] came to be a testimony, to bear witness concerning the light; so that through him, everyone might put his trust in God and be faithful to him. John 1:7John 1:7
For the Torah [law] was given through Moshe [Moses]; grace and truth came through Yeshua [Jesus] the Messiah.John 1;17
These scripture references, and many more like them, are stating that the way Jesus lived was the perfect image of God; however, not to be confused with idol worship of a physical image (such as a lamb) as was the way of the Egyptians to make deities out of animals. It is clearly written that we are supposed to be worshiping who Jesus was through his actions and his words and NOT an outward appearance of Jesus. Through knowing the spirit of Jesus we are able to understand who God is.
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law.Galatians 5:22-23
Today, as we all are affected by the circumstances of COVID-19, if there ever was a time when we need to understand the spirit of unity and love, it is now! While we remain distanced by our physical spaces, it becomes more and more clear how we need each other to survive — Let it be our existential prayer and quest for pass-over liberation!
