Ego is our worst enemy because it does not allow us to connect to anything greater than ourselves. Ego tells us that we are the almighty who have all the great answers and life is all just one big rat race; however, God wants us to be humble to understand that we are not individual gods, but are all a part of one another. Each of us are connected to one another, a piece of God contained in each one of us, making up a whole God. The only way that we can ever truly identify with the Spirit of God that is hidden within each one of us, is when we are truly humbled. God cannot use the prideful to advance His Kingdom since they are too busy advancing their own.
The Beatitudes preached by Jesus during his sermon on the mount:
Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.Matthew 5:3-12
Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.
Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.
Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.
Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.
Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.
Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
When we are at our worst place we realize we cannot do anything in our own power. It is during those darker days that we are seeking God to help give us strength to overcome them. It is during our worst days that we find ourselves on our knees pleading to God. This is the place that we have to come to be able to recognize God — in our stubbornness we need pain to finally call out to Him.
When we realize that we need to die to our physical selves, our ego, to truly be humbled, then we will understand that we are not the ones who are in control. This is when we can allow God to take control of our lives. This is when we find true strength because living is not in our own power, but life is now driven by the power of God. We are also no longer broken because all our broken parts will be so crazy-glued back together that nothing will ever break them apart again.
Recognizing that we are the child and He is the Father is when we start to identify with our true selves, which is our spiritual selves, always dying to our physical selves/desires by giving power instead to our spiritual selves. When we seek to understand the Spirit of God that resides deep within ourselves, making God’s Spirit real in our actions, the more we submit to God in ourselves, the more we allow Him to be a part of ourselves and trust that only He is in control.
